‘Maigre Pierre’ is the nickname of a French cyclist from the 1950s. All the best cyclists have a nickname engraved in our collective memory. I want to pay homage to this lyrical yet working-class tradition of cycling. However, I am not trying to make romantic images, and even less so, sports pictures. My parents took me to see my first Tour de France when I was 3. I have followed every Tour since then, almost religiously, either on the radio, on TV, or by the roadsides. In 2023, I have decided that I would follow the Tour de France route, hoping to paint a portrait of a part of contemporary France, of its various spaces and its people. Here are some research images taken during the summer of 2022. ‘Maigre Pierre’ is the nickname of a French cyclist from the 1950s.
